Mary Blum

“As in ancient diagrams of the earth, the universe and the inner cosmos, these works by Mary Blum investigate the division of space. She combines the observance of the natural world with that of the geometric components of life and matter, thus polarizing the two.  It is the basis of all abstraction, this breaking down of the natural world, cellular, microscopic; to the visually available.”

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am interested in color, form and movement.  With simple form there can be an infinite number of associations and memories. Always an invitation to the interpretation of the viewer. The reflective surfaces of the metallic fields and mosaics in my work create movement and inspire me to the theme that solid matter is always energy in motion. The metallics also have a way of showcasing the mechanics of light outside of the picture plane. The environment of the viewer impacts the work. I like that connection as I do the cultural significances of gold, silver and other metals over time.
