Carol Flaitz

In my art, I use abstraction to develop paintings with textured mediums that are inspired by scientific images. The paintings explore the amalgamation of technology and art and reflect our relationship as humans to the barrage of technology in our culture and its effect upon us. Through my marriage to Dr. Phil Flaitz, a senior engineer who works in material science, I became acquainted with photographs of the interior of computer chips – microscopic images heretofore never seen by the human eye. My artwork is further inspired by the sense of wonder that these images are a new visual frontier.

Originally a ceramic artist, I have sought to combine the organic feel of ceramic glazing with these mysterious electronic landscapes. This results in paintings rich in texture evoking mysterious landscapes of a questionable scale. Often times, my observers want to run their hands across the surface of my artwork. I encourage this; my art is touchable.

My artistic career began at the age of thirteen under the instruction of Katherine Nelson, a student of Hans Hoffman. Alfred, NY was where I was raised, also home to the College of Ceramics where I received my Fine Arts degree and then went on to study ceramic sculpture in Cardiff, Wales. Currently, I teach art and show my work locally, in New York City, and internationally.
